Country: Australia Phillip Island is best known for its connection to Australia’s early colonial history. Explorer and seaman George Bass named the island after Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales, after reaching it from Sydney in a whaleboat on 5 January 1798. About 125 kilometres south-southeast of Melbourne in Victoria, it remains a distinctive island destination.
